biotin

Why is biotin important?

Biotin is a water-soluble B-vitamin – vitamin B7 – that the body does not store in any quantity, so it comes from food, day by day.Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and normal skin, to normal energy-yielding metabolism and to normal psychological function. Each two-tablet serving provides 10,000 µg as D-biotin, the naturally occurring form, which is 20,000% of the nutrient reference value of 50 µg. Alongside it are three minerals with functions of their own: zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, normal skin and normal nails; selenium contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and normal nails; copper contributes to normal hair pigmentation and normal skin pigmentation; and all three contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. The bamboo stem extract provides 10 mg of silica and is listed for what it is, not for what it does.

Each two-tablet daily serving provides 10,000 µg of biotin as D-biotin, which is 20,000% of the nutrient reference value, together with 3 mg of zinc as zinc citrate, 55 µg of selenium as L-selenomethionine and 1 mg of copper as copper bisglycinate. The tablets also carry 10 mg of silica from bamboo stem extract (Bambusa vulgaris) at a 15:1 ratio – fifteen parts dried stem to one part extract. Frequently asked questions

Is 10,000 µg of biotin too much – and why is it that high?

10,000 µg is 20,000% of the nutrient reference value, which is 50 µg – the amount that covers most adults from an ordinary diet. Biotin is water-soluble, no tolerable upper intake level has been set for it, and the body passes what it does not use. Servings of this size are common in biotin supplements; we state the figure because it is what the pack contains, not because a larger number does more – a larger amount is not a larger effect, and the function biotin contributes to is the same one at this amount as at any other. Keep to the two tablets a day on the pack.

Will it make my hair grow, or thicker?

No – and we do not claim it. The authorised statements for this formula are about maintenance: biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and normal skin; zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, normal skin and normal nails; selenium contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and normal nails. "Maintenance of normal" means keeping the ordinary function these nutrients are part of – it is not a promise of growth, thickness or shine, and we do not make one. If you are losing hair, that has causes worth looking into with a doctor rather than a tablet.

What does the bamboo do?

It supplies silica – 10 mg per serving, from a 15:1 extract of the stem of Bambusa vulgaris, a plant naturally rich in it. That is the whole of what we can say. No reference intake has been established for silica and there is no authorised function for it, so it is on the label as an ingredient, not as a reason to take the product. The functions on this page belong to biotin, zinc, selenium and copper.

Why are zinc, selenium and copper in a biotin supplement?

Because each has an authorised function of its own in the same territory. Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, normal skin and normal nails; selenium contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and normal nails; copper contributes to normal hair pigmentation and normal skin pigmentation; and all three contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. The amounts are modest – 3 mg of zinc, 55 µg of selenium and 1 mg of copper – intended to sit alongside a varied diet, not to replace it.

Is it vegan, and how long does a pouch last?

Yes – the tablets are suitable for vegans and vegetarians, and the formula is free from gluten, dairy, lactose, soya, nuts, sugar and GMO, with no artificial colours, flavourings or sweeteners and no unnecessary fillers. Two tablets a day; a pouch of 180 tablets is 90 servings, about three months. Reseal it and store in a cool, dry place. For adults aged 18 and over.
